Poem for a loved one

How I wish I’d known you better

Even though you were my family, I never understood who you were

The blood that ran through our veins should have meant something

But instead in so many ways we were strangers with the same last name

How I wish we could have talked

With us it was so hard to relate to one another, never were our views alike

You would ask if I remembered something, the easiest thing to say was no

I did not remember things the way you did, and you wanted our memories the same

How I wish you were here

You always said you would out live us all, never would you go away

Now I’m here back in the house where I was raised, but you are not around

What a mess you left behind, much like our times together when I was always to blame

How I wish I’d known you better

I knew that you were failing, throughout the final years of your life

I spoke up but once again, you called my sister and plead your case

I was not listened too, so once again you were with her when your time came.

If only you could see my grief, maybe then you would realize how much I had truely loved you.
